SPIN Author Spotlight–Maggie Adams

In today’s SPIN Author Spotlight, meet romance author Maggie Adams.  Maggie is an Amazon Best Selling contemporary romance author. Her first book in the Tempered Steel Series, Whistlin’ Dixie, debuted in Amazon’s Top 100 for Women’s Fiction, humor, on November, 2014 and then again at #61 in 2016. Since then, she has consistently made the Amazon best seller 5-star list with Leather and Lace, Something’s Gotta Give, Love, Marriage & Mayhem, and Forged in Fire. She is also the recipient of the Dayreader Review’s Best New Series Award for 2015. Her series has launched the tiny town of Grafton, Illinois, into International recognition with sales in Mexico, Ireland, Scotland, Australia and the UK.

When she’s not writing, she enjoys traveling (usually just to the grocery store), dancing (around the kitchen to avoid cooking) and relaxing with her family (aka taking a nap while watching a movie). She loves to chat, so feel free to look her up!

1. Describe your books and your writing style.

I write romance with an erotic Edge. The men are real men, faulty and yet endearing. The women are intelligent, sassy, and caring. Their dialogue is snappy and the sub characters are quirky and fun. The Tempered Steel Series is loosely based on actual events and set in a real town.

2. Talk about your process. Where do you write? When do you write? Are you linear or do you write scenes and put them together later? Who are your muses and where do you get your best ideas?

Lots of questions! Lol. I work at a small desk in my living room during the day because I own a home daycare. I work from my upstairs office on the weekend. I try to have a general idea of the storyline but I let those voices in my head take over and have their way! I like to get my ideas from the world around me. The grocery store, restaurants, the airport, wherever. I’m a people watcher.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

I’m releasing books 4-6 of my Tempered Steel Series in a bundle for eBook and paperback. It continues the saga of the Coalson Brothers as they search for the people respond for ruining their family business.

4. What is your current project?

I’m so excited to be working on my next book in my Lustful erotic trilogy, Lustful Lies! My lonely widow thinks she’s found someone but his kinky desires delve into dangerous territory for her.

5. Now about you… Very generally speaking, where do you call home?

The Midwest USA. I live in a rural country town.

6. As a reader… What genre do you most often read? What is your all-time favorite book, and why?

I read mostly the romance genre but I enjoy everything. My favorite book is The Flame and the Flower. It was the first romance novel I ever read and it set me on this wonderful journey as a novelist.

7. What do you like to do when you’re not writing or reading?

I cook, I dance sometimes at the same time! And I spend time with my family. I’m a big family oriented person.

8. We all have guilty pleasures. I enjoy boy bands. There, I said it. What is your guilty pleasure?

Goofy Romantic comedies. My faves are Beautician and the Beast and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

9. What superpower would you choose, and why?

Healing. Sorrow, Pain, mental health

10. If you could live anywhere, you’d choose…

Anywhere by my family

11. I wish _________________ would read my book.

Lexi Blake because she’s my fave author

12. In the airport, you overhear a heated argument between a husband and wife. You:

politely ignore it.
stop what you’re doing and watch with rapt attention.
mention it to airport personnel.
tuck it away for use in a future book.

Sexual Couple, Passion Man Kiss Sensual Woman to Neck, Love Flame

The Coalson family saga continues with only small clues leading to the person responsible for the downfall of the family business and the ever-increasing presence of criminal activity in their small town. They vow to wreak vengeance on those responsible, but unforeseen circumstances may put the brothers and the ones they love in jeopardy.

Brandon and Nick foil an attempt to assassinate a pretty private eye and her sweet sister. Together with Sam and his best SEAL buddies, Jax and Noah, they vow to bring the ringleader to justice and rid their town of the criminals. But nothing goes according to plan, and the men must fight Mother Nature, a murderer, and the local law enforcement. Not to mention that the new secretary, Anna Meeks, is definitely hiding something, and Brandon is determined to uncover her secrets, and the luscious body she’s trying to hide under those ridiculously conservative clothes.

Lucky Coalson’s luck has run out. He’s been accused of murder and it’s up to the Coalsons and the Morgan sisters to find the real killer. Lucky cringes to know that the very woman who threw him in the river is going to be the one to save him from a prison cell. And feisty P. I. Renee Morgan isn’t too happy herself about it because every time she’s near him, her body responds in a very unprofessional manner.

Although Nick Coalson is attracted to the fiery redhead, Rebecca Morgan, her dangerous job makes her off limits, especially as she is almost killed during their investigation. He wants quiet and submissive, not reckless and determined. But her sweet curves and sexy smile are melting his resolve and his heart. When she is kidnapped by a human trafficker, Nick will need the help of an outside source who wants Rebecca for himself. So, who will come out the victor?

Read the story from the beginning with Whistlin’ Dixie, and meet all brothers and the sexy, strong-willed women that win their hearts. https://goo.gl/j7yUPc

SPIN Author Spotlight–Patient Lee

Patient Lee imageToday’s SPIN Author Spotlight is on Erotic Realism author Patient Lee.  She’s Chief of the Smut Desk, way back in the corner of the SPIN offices, and recently she put down her pen long enough to tell us a little bit about herself and to answer Pandora’s Dirty Dozen interview questions.

Get to know Patient Lee.
“When love wins, we ALL win!  Sign up for my newsletter at http://www.patientlee.com and get TWO free books!

My ideas come from a variety of sources– an overheard sentence (a student declaring “I have tasty fingers!” in the middle of class became “The Side Effect.”), a song, an announcement (“Come with a friend and save two dollars!”). I select the kink for the story based on what best works with the characters, which is the main reason I write with variety. The other, of course, is my short attention span caused by raising children and teaching high school.

I work full-time and have a husband, and three children. I write when I can, sometimes balancing the laptop on my knees and a cat on my chest. I enjoy my seasonal camp site that overlooks a beautiful creek in the mountains. In the summer, I spend many hours at a folding table under a canopy, writing and sipping chardonnay or a super-hoppy IPA.”

Let Patient Lee tell you about her genre:
erotic realism
noun :: e-ro-tic re-al-ism :: [ih-ro-tik ree-uh-liz-uh m]
a. a manner of treating subject matter that presents a careful description of everyday life, usually of regular people, often of lower and middle classes, and explicitly detailed, scorching-hot sex.
b. a theory of writing in which the ordinary, familiar, or mundane aspects of life are represented in a straightforward or matter-of-fact manner that is presumed to reflect life as it actually is only with way more scorching-hot sex.
ex. Gay Greenhorn on the F/V Lost Agnes, Mobile Home for the Holidays, Mrs. Maitland’s SAD Valentine

1. Describe your books and your writing style.

Erotic Realism. I take the mundane and infuse it with all kinds of sexy stuff. I write about everyday people- teachers, crab fishermen, janitors, homeless people, the couple next door, the 18 year old down the block, people in trailer parks, victims of bullies. I write both straight and LGBTQ, happy and sad, gentle and rough, casual sex and romance and casual sex that turns into romance, BDSM, satire, and anything else that comes to mind. All of my stories are different because I focus on the story and the characters before I incorporate the sex. My stories are VERY explicit, so no readers under 18, please. Even if erotica isn’t your thing, you will enjoy the stories. (Skim the sex parts, if you have to!)

2. Talk about your process. Where do you write? When do you write? Are you linear or do you write scenes and put them together later? Who are your muses and where do you get your best ideas?

My process looks a lot like a random mess of thoughts. I have a graph paper tablet which goes everywhere with me. If you flip through you’ll find complete story scenes, random sentences, my Walmart list, a bad sketch of something to come back to, the notes I took while on the phone with the doctor’s office, the same scene written four times in a row (true story! The first dream in Mrs. Maitland’s SAD Valentine took four complete rewrites to nail it.), diagramless crosswords, and anything else that can come out of the end of a 0.7 mm mechanical pencil (Bic Atlantis, when available). I don’t have a muse. I have vines of Laffy Taffy which fall from above like in the the Nestlé Quiksand scene in Wreck It Ralph. Unrelated ideas fall on my head, and when I get enough of them, I start to weave my tale. Mrs. Maitland’s SAD Valentine came from a conversation with a biology teacher. She mentioned breeding her ball pythons for Valentine’s Day (Vine #1). I was writing for the Literotica Valentine’s Day Contest, so that was perfect. Vine #2 came when hubby and I were discussing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which we both struggle with during the long winter months. As I thought about putting them together, Vine #3 dropped. Make it an older woman and a younger man. A biology teacher and a school custodian. 36,000 words later, I won the contest. I write anywhere I can, but I concentrate best at a desk or table. I prefer to sit outside my camper, overlooking the creek. Finding time is another story. I teach full time and have three kids who play travel hockey, so I spend most of my life driving my car.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

My latest release is a collection of M/F erotica about milestones in relationships called Quick & Dirty 2: Milestones.
Birthday Girl: Brooke’s first time.
The Side Effect: Zack proposes to Lindsay in public.
Suffocating: A Dark Nuptial Tragedy (Seriously dark. Bring a flashlight.)
Wallpaper: Deanna’s pregnant and horny.
Purple Glitter: Laura seeks revenge when she assumes Danny is cheating.
*BONUS* Sharing Her Heart: The Prequel to Mrs. Maitland’s SAD Valentine.
The first five stories are brand new to Amazon, but Sharing Her Heart is available separately.
Here are a couple of reviews:
From Sheena D: Sharing her heart is an exquisite memoir about young love from the eyes of Judy Carlisle. Robert Maitland is the kind of student at Greenburg High who cannot do a thing right. Gradually he turns things around not just for himself but also for Judy Carlisle. Patient Lee brings to life all the loves and hates of school days. She touches on subjects like school bullying and the effects teachers can have on their students. It is a poignant and entertaining story which contains some erotica but the characters are real and spring to life as you turn the pages. A good read!
From MJ: Patient Lee has written a book as advertised. It’s about a teenage crush and the teachers around them with their sleights and mini-dramas. The story is kind of a YA coming-of-age story salted with erotica. The characters are well-developed. They are folks from a blue collar town in America and Patient Lee does a great job flushing them out for us. I enjoyed the read though I found the book a bit simplistic for my tastes (I like smutpunk because I like complexity). Furthermore, I thought some of the similes and metaphors were a little off but that’s no big deal and how regular people speak. SPOILER: The bit about dissecting the heart was quite a lot of fun. The young lovers feed each other chocolate while cutting open a pig’s heart. Pretty cool. Give it a read if you’re into romance.

4. What is your current project?

Pittsburgh- a MM shortie with sensory deprivation The Facebook challenge was to post a one-word story title and a brief synopsis. I looked up from my spot in the passenger seat and saw the sign for Pittsburgh. Three minutes later, the story was sketched out in my head. Clarke meets Joe in a Philadelphia sports bar while watching a 76ers basketball game. They leave together in a snowstorm, and an accident causes a total blackout before they get to Joe’s apartment, so when they get there, Clarke doesn’t see the sports memorabilia. He assumes they both root for Philadelphia. After all, they high-fived over the Sixers, right? Except Pittsburgh doesn’t have a basketball team, so who else do you root for when you grow up along the Allegheny River? Clarke falls hard and fast for Joe, who introduces him to the pleasure (with a hint of danger) of BDSM sensory deprivation. He imagines dates at Flyers games, decked out in black and orange, but will he still be in love when the lights go on?

5. Now about you… Very generally speaking, where do you call home?

Northeast US. I summer in my camper, overlooking the creek.

6. As a reader… What genre do you most often read? What is your all-time favorite book, and why?

I read a lot of realistic fiction, but I have a special place in my heart for Stephen King. I’m currently reading A Widow for One Year by John Irving, but I haven’t gotten too far yet. I always say my favorite books of all time are The Stand by Stephen King and I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb. The Stand is not my usual reading material, but the book is incredible any way you look at it. Characters, good vs. evil, pop culture splashed throughout. What strikes me the most is how in the beginning of the book, there were so many missed opportunities to avert disaster. I thought about that a lot when I wrote Purple Glitter and incorporated the same kind of pivot points, where if the character had chosen differently, the story would have ended right there. I don’t even remember what I Know This Much Is True is really about, other than a schizophrenic brother, and that’s a good thing. When I reread it someday, it will be like déjà vu, a pleasant reconnecting with an old friend. I sobbed for hours when that book was over. A.M. Manay’s November Snow series is a recent addition to my favorites. Vampires aren’t usually my thing, but holy hell, can this author write.

7. What do you like to do when you’re not writing or reading?

Crossword puzzles. I do the NYTimes Sunday puzzle every week. Sometimes I have to cheat, otherwise I don’t make any progress and it’s no fun, but I try not to. I also do diagramless crosswords and acrostics. Although I don’t like the driving (actually, I outright resent it. Don’t judge me.), one of the greatest pleasures in my life is watching my kids play ice hockey. All three play, including my daughter, who plays on a girls’ team two hours from home. And I hate driving.

8. We all have guilty pleasures. I enjoy boy bands. There, I said it. What is your guilty pleasure?

My answer to this used to be gay porn, but now, since I write it, I guess it isn’t a surprise. I’ll say Nickelback. I shouldn’t like them, but I do.

9. What superpower would you choose, and why?

Breathing underwater. I used to dream that I could. It was relaxing.

10. If you could live anywhere, you’d choose…

In my camper. Doesn’t matter where, as long as there is water to stare at.

11. I wish _________________ would read my book.

SPIN Author Spotlight–Dr. J.

Dr. JToday in the SPIN Author Spotlight, we’re welcoming erotica and erotic romance author Dr. J., one the newest members of SPIN.

Dr. J. arrived at her writing career after being a condom packer, sex educator, sex therapist, and finally a college professor of human sexuality. Using her vast knowledge and experience of sexuality and the mind, she continues her education efforts to integrate positive sexuality into the human experience through her stories. She writes within the Romance and Erotica genres.

Living the island life on the Atlantic coast, Dr. J. plays petanque, knits, and supports all the visual and performing arts of the area.

Recently, Dr. J. was kind enough to stop by the SPIN offices long enough to answer Pandora’s Dirty Dozen.  Meet Dr. J.

1. Describe your books and your writing style.

Erotica and Erotic Romance. I write with a therapist’s eye and an artist’s heart.

2. Talk about your process. Where do you write? When do you write? Are you linear or do you write scenes and put them together later? Who are your muses and where do you get your best ideas?

For now, my writing spot is the dining room table. That will change as I am moving to a new house where I have a dedicated office with balcony and a palm tree. I’m a systemic writer; I receive the story in full circular form. I capture that and get it on paper, and then I create the details or bones of the story. My ideas hit me in the middle of a walk, watching someone do a task, or in the midst of a conversation. It happens anywhere.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

Forever Tattooed is my last release. I hope to continue it into a novel. Here’s what it’s about: Tattooed Forever owner, Gabe Stewart, revisits his past when the international photographer, Dana Parker enters his shop, fresh off a plane from Thailand. Dana had kept a secret for two years and is now ready to share it with Gabe. She wonders if he can give her what she desperately wants and if he would want to. Much to Dana’s surprise, Gabe reveals a secret of his own. With these disclosures in the open, fireworks ignite between them.

4. What is your current project?

I have two current projects. The first one is called Chronicles of a Sex Doctor. It is a collection of short stories about how individuals step into their sexual desire, individually and within couples or groups. My next project is a novella currently titled, Our Lucky Charm. It is a sports story set at a Petanque Tournament. I get to introduce a new generation of people to this French game and entice them with the sexual rituals of my characters.

5. Now about you… Very generally speaking, where do you call home?

NE Florida, on the coast.

6. As a reader… What genre do you most often read? What is your all-time favorite book, and why?

I love thrillers, romance and erotica as genres but I enjoy stories that touch the heart. My all-time favorite book is by Barbara Kingsolver called The Prodigal Summer. It is vibrant writing and the way she weaved the story is masterful.

7. What do you like to do when you’re not writing or reading?

I am an avid knitter. My handmade socks are the choice of all my family members.

8. We all have guilty pleasures. I enjoy boy bands. There, I said it. What is your guilty pleasure?

Don’t tell. I’m a huge Nutella fan. So tasty.

9. What superpower would you choose, and why?

The ability to create food for all. I hate hunger.

10. If you could live anywhere, you’d choose…

Paradise. And I found it and choose it.

11. I wish _________________ would read my book.

SPIN Author Spotlight–Ian Saul Whitcomb

ISW profile picThis week, erotica author Ian Saul Whitcomb is in the SPIN Author Spotlight.  If you’re not familiar with him and his work, you’re in for a treat.  Somewhere between Mexico and Canada, not too far from the centerline of the U.S., Ian Saul Whitcomb spends his days writing, blogging, and occasionally tweeting, while struggling to fend off his mid-life crisis (under the theory that if he can postpone it till the age of sixty, the definition of “mid” means he’ll live to be a hundred and twenty). He also works for a large corporation, but tries not to think about that any more than he has to.

Recently, he was kind enough to stop by the SPIN offices and answer Pandora’s Dirty Dozen interview.  Meet Ian Saul Whitcomb.

1. Describe your books and your writing style.

I write steamy erotica books about nice people in unusual situations/relationships. I don’t seem to be able to pick a sub-genre and stick with it … my bibliography ranges from sci-fi to interracial to supernatural to transgender to fantasy … though all of it’s dirty. I mostly use a POV of First Person, Horny.

2. Talk about your process. Where do you write? When do you write? Are you linear or do you write scenes and put them together later? Who are your muses and where do you get your best ideas?

I try to write at least one paragraph a day on whatever my project of the moment might be, usually in the evening. I find that if I sit down to write a whole page or two or three, I get daunted and blocked, but if I sit down to write a paragraph, I almost always end up doing at least a page. My ideas tend to grow organically from reactions to things. For instance, Sexpossessed came about because I read this bizarro fiction book that I thought was going to be a fun sex romp into supernatural perversity, and it turned out to be way more serious and less sexy than I expected. So I decided to write the kind of book I was hoping to read, since I’d been cheated out of having my expectations met. “I Married a Galaxy Conquering Alien Space Monstrosity” popped into my head as I was looking for my next project, and I mulled over alternatives. “Sci-fi or supernatural? I just did supernatural, so sci-fi. Okay, space opera or alien invaders? Alien invaders.” That got the word “Alien” stuck in my head, and I thought, what about a story that’s like the Alien movies, but the body-horror aliens are the good guys?

3. Tell us about your latest release.

Big Flipping Deal is an erotic romance about a guy who falls for a trans-woman while they’re remodeling a house together. Two people thrown together by unexpected circumstances, the narrator gets the hots for the heroine, and then he has to deal with the fact that he stays hot for her even after he finds out she’s trans. It won the Literotica Reader’s Choice Award in its serial form for the Transsexuals and Crossdressers category, and it seemed to be a big hit with the trans readers who gave me feedback.

4. What is your current project?

I’m revising my naughty fantasy novel, The Inn, for publication later this year. It’s about a fantasy writer who finds himself transported to the world of his books and then gets all of his heroic characters killed because he’s in the wrong place at just the wrong time. So he has to stop the big boss villain from destroying the world, and all he has to do it with is a pen.

5. Now about you… Very generally speaking, where do you call home?

I’m from Texas, and getting steadily more embarrassed about that with every news story about Texas politics that sees print.

6. As a reader… What genre do you most often read? What is your all-time favorite book, and why?

I read fantasy and science fiction, mostly, and I’m going to call my favorite book The Gods of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Burroughs gets a bad rap for perceived racism in his Tarzan books, but the dude was writing science fiction in 1914 where the hero, John Carter, is in an interracial romance, the bad guys are white supremacist religious fanatics, and every time a group starts touting itself as superior to other groups, John Carter ends up overturning their whole civilization and humiliating them.

7. What do you like to do when you’re not writing or reading?

Family friendly answer: I really like playing tabletop roleplaying games, and I’m a huge Star Wars fan.

8. We all have guilty pleasures. I enjoy boy bands. There, I said it. What is your guilty pleasure?

Family friendly answer: geez, I can’t even think of a family friendly answer. Let’s just say it’s very guilty.

9. What superpower would you choose, and why?

The power to make everyone in the world understand how love and empathy make human beings worthwhile.

10. If you could live anywhere, you’d choose…

Iain M. Banks’ sci-fi utopia, The Culture

11. I wish _________________ would read my book.

a powerful Hollywood director

Ian Whitcomb1
Ian Saul Whitcomb’s latest release is BIG FLIPPING DEAL, which I had the pleasure of reading and I absolutely loved it.  In fact, here’s my 5 STAR review.
What a great story! Terminally nice-guy Nick unexpectedly inherits half a house when his little-old-lady neighbor dies. The heir of the other half? Her niece, Lindsey, the hottest chick Nick has ever met. Their challenge: Renovate the house, flip it, and split the profits. But can Nick keep his libido in check, working side-by-side with his dream girl? But it turns out, Lindsey has a big secret. And it challenges everything Nick ever thought about himself, relationships, and love.

Big Flipping Deal is drop-dead sexy. But it’s also funny, heartfelt, and thoughtful as it challenges our own attitudes along with Nick’s. I love this book! 5 BIG STARS!

SPIN Book Launch–Luka’s Dawn by A.M. Manay

If you adore paranormal author A.M. Manay’s award-winning November Snow series, and were heartbroken like I was when it ended, you’re in LUCK!

At the very end of She Marches Through Fire, Manay gave us a tiny glimpse of what happens next.  Now, she’s released the first November Snow epilogue story, Luka’s Dawn.  Luka is nothing if not the bad boy you hate to love, and he’s back.   Along with all your favorite characters.  And it’s brilliant!  I know, because I read an ARC.

Here’s the description.

What’s a failed supervillain to do when the object of his obsession dies?
Luka Lazarri, vampire terrorist and would-be dictator, faces life without November Snow. He now inhabits a world in which he is utterly defeated, sick and living in hiding, jailed by his own family. He waits for November to be born again, clinging to the hope that he will have the chance to know her. Will the consummate survivor succumb to despair, or will he build himself a new life? And if the reincarnated psychic finally lays her eyes on him, will she see a monster, or a friend?

I don’t want to tell you much more than that, it’s a shortie, one you’ll devour in an afternoon, then beg for more.  And, once again, you’re in luck, because this is just Episode 1.  More are on the way.  Cue extreme happy dance, y’all!

SPIN Author Spotlight–A.M. Manay

a.m. manay authorIn today’s SPIN Author Spotlight, meet award-winning paranormal author A.M. Manay.  Full disclosure–I have read all of A.M. Manay’s work, and I’m a HUGE fan!  Even though I’m not a regular reader of vampire books, I was hooked from the first word.

I love the tagline from her website–Intelligent Supernatural Fantasy:  Magic, Vampires, Fairies, and Werewolves for the Sophisticated Reader.  That describes her work way better than I could.

She’s a busy lady who wears many hats.  In addition to her work as an award-winning indie author of supernatural new adult fantasy, A.M. Manay is a former inner-city chemistry teacher, a singer, a yoga enthusiast, and a mother through domestic open adoption.

She has a passion for increasing diversity in popular culture and for strong heroines who stand up for themselves, make their own decisions, and don’t depend on romance as their reason for being.

I asked her to brave Pandora’s Dirty Dozen interview and here’s what she had to say.

1. Describe your books and your writing style.

I aspire to write fantasy novels for clever people, with smart dialogue and real stakes. I like to think my characters are interesting, diverse, and reasonably self-aware. I try to keep my plots semi-reasonable, given that magic and/or vampires are generally involved.

2. Talk about your process. Where do you write? When do you write? Are you linear or do you write scenes and put them together later? Who are your muses and where do you get your best ideas?

I am not very linear. I tend to jump around a bit, the fit things together. I can write almost anywhere, but my most productive locales are my dining room table, Starbucks, and my child’s Tae Kwon Do studio. I don’t know that I have a particular muse. I am an avid consumer of books, movies, and television, which often provoke my imagination.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

I recently release the third novel in my November Snow Series of supernatural adventures, She Marches Through Fire. My heroine is a teenage psychic turned vampire who, naturally, needs to figure out a way to save the world. Start with the first one, She Dies at the End. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  (No, you won’t.  You’ll be disappointed if you don’t.–P.S.)

4. What is your current project?

I have two, actually. One is a series of short stories set in the aftermath of my November Snow novels, focused on the semi-reformed villain of the series. The other is something brand new that I’m really excited about. It’s a young adult high fantasy / swords and sorcery novel. The two point-of-view characters are Shiloh, an exceptionally gifted teenage sorceress, and Silas, an advisor to the king. Silas is willing to do absolutely anything to keep the kingdom from falling into ruin. Shiloh lives with a congenital disability, but that doesn’t stop her from walking straight into danger and throwing down. I was inspired partly by English history, especially the War of the Roses and the Tudor dynasty.

5. Now about you… Very generally speaking, where do you call home?

The San Francisco Bay Area

6. As a reader… What genre do you most often read? What is your all-time favorite book, and why?

I love fantasy and historical fiction, but I’ll read anything. It’s hard to choose one favorite book, but if I have to, today I choose Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. She has this way of humanizing terrible people, and her dialogue is amazing.

7. What do you like to do when you’re not writing or reading?

I enjoy singing, spending time with my family, watching movies, and kickboxing workouts.

8. We all have guilty pleasures. I enjoy boy bands. There, I said it. What is your guilty pleasure?

I love me a Coke Icee.

9. What superpower would you choose, and why?

Telekinesis. I’d love to just be able to stand there and throw stuff around like a boss.

10. If you could live anywhere, you’d choose…

The SF Bay Area, where I am now, but I’d make my family all move here, too.

Steal of a Deal from SPIN Author Fantasy Novelist Herb Mallette!

Recently, fantasy novelist Herb Mallette stopped by the SPIN offices to tell us about a special promotion he has going beginning JUNE 26.  Take it away, Herb!

I’m hard at work on the revisions to my latest Delvonian Tales novel, and to ensure I get the continuity right, I’ve spent a couple of weeks rereading and making notes on the first four books in the series.

Dang, they’re pretty good!

Though not a 100% humble person, I think my failure to achieve literary superstardom colludes with my certainty of having improved over time, creating a one-two punch of low expectations about my older works. Whenever I revisit them, I foresee a catalogue of ill-judged missteps and mortifying gaffes. But I’m always wrong, which I suppose is why my star ratings on Amazon are pretty solid.

At any rate, fresh from an entertaining sojourn through the books, I find myself wanting to share them. So next week, I’m making one free and putting the others on sale.

Starting Monday, June 26, you can rush over to Amazon.com and pick up The Last Tragedy for $1.99, The Sharp Edge of Memory and The Ingressionist for just $0.99 each, and The Identity of Evil absolutely free. These are high-adventure fantasy novels packed with delightful characters, ingenious plot twists, and a unique, richly built world full of magic and monstrosities, and if you snap them all up, you’ll be getting half a million words of fiction for about half the cost of a typical paperback.

SPIN Book Launch–BROTHER’S KEEPER by Jolie Mason

BROTHER’S KEEPER by SPIN author Jolie Mason is out TODAY!  It’s the follow-up to BROTHER MINE, the beginning of the Brothers Assassins Series.

Jolie brothers keeper

About the series

The world of the Brotherhood is falling apart. As a secret organization of guns for hire, they were an open secret among the rich and the political powers that be. Across worlds, the wealthy and the powerful knew who to call to get a job done.

But, among the brotherhood there is a debate about how to do what they do, and there is a rising rebellion among the men and women who kill because they had no choice. They are beginning to realize they may have more power than they realized, and power allows one choices.

BROTHER’S KEEPER is the second book in the series.  Here’s the description.

He’s what happens when bad guys switch sides

As an assassin, he lives on a razor’s edge of losing it all every day, but since Cari Renata came into his life there is so much more to lose.

Cari Renata’s sister is dead, or so she believes. And, Bry is the one who told her that horrific lie. Her sister is hidden among the Brax in Freedom Colony, and Cari can’t know. He promised his brother he would protect both the women they love with the lie. Bryson will do that at any cost.

Cari owns the universe, or at least a small part of it. She runs a major broadcasting conglomerate that spans several systems, but she’s an investigator at heart. Cari won’t keep pushing at the terror attack that supposedly took her sister’s life, and she’s poked the wrong beast in going after Todari House.

Bryson may have to break a promise to keep a promise, and come clean about Mal Renata’s real situation. When he does, it may cost him more than he ever expected.

Confession…  I have already read an ARC of BROTHER’S KEEPER and it’s fantastic!  Mason brings the sci-fi suspense and intrigue as usual, and this time she ups the heat.  How about a little teaser?

He watched her all the time. Told himself he had a legitimate reason. That’s what he told himself. He didn’t know if it was truth or a lie, but it was a good cover.

She was in danger.

Bryson stared at the monitor of his holo screen, as he pulled on a plain white, formal dress shirt that would be part of his cover tonight. The target was special this time.

Cari stood with her back to the camera drone, piling her long, golden hair onto her head in an elegant sweep and letting the tail of it drop again as she sat watching her reflection change to that sad, lost look she wore so often, when she thought no one would see. Only then did she let it show.

Cari was coming in for the night, not going out. Bryson was going to work. Their schedules were opposite most of the time, however, he monitored Cari with every resource he had. The men kept shifts in teams of four. No expense was spared.

Bryson looked at the chrono. It was getting late.

He did his best work late, and tonight he had an important job. This wasn’t a job for a client. It was personal. The Brotherhood was removing an obstacle.

Looking back at the holo, Bryson stopped with both hands on the fasteners of his shirt, his eyes glued to the screen, she pulled a tiny clip from her bangs, and continued preparing for bed, letting the fair waves cascade around her back in a shiny, silken skein.

True blondes were rare as doby eggs anymore, and it wasn’t in fashion. Most changed their hair color away from the blond. Not Cari, though.

She didn’t change to fit silly conventions. She changed conventions. He smiled to himself.

She’d have a long road changing this one. Her blond hair accompanied a collection of recessive traits that were associated with some pretty ugly genetic anomalies that were nearly unheard of in this day and age of cloning and genetic manipulation, and people tended to think about the practical concerns in modern day, rather than how the light caught the colors making it look like sunshine.

However, as he stared at Cari Renata’s holo image, all he could see was the poetry of her: hair long and shining, the color of Desian honey, smaller, rounded breasts, long, long legs. Blue eyes that could, and did, go green with high emotion, especially when she was angry.

Had he ever seen them stay blue when she looked his way? He doubted it.

Still staring, though he shouldn’t, he saw more of that glorious body as she dropped the sheath dress she’d been wearing to some formal evening somewhere, and bent to pick it up from the floor. He could only see her back, and yet, even the barest glance made his mouth go dry.

He should look away. He knew it. He should give her the privacy she deserved. Yet, he didn’t.

She’d only worn panties beneath the sheath, a small triangle the color of her little black dress. Bryson’s hand clenched and unclenched at his side. He drank her in, even knowing it was wrong, that she would be angry. One day, when he confessed this, she would be so very angry.

If they survived.

If Todari didn’t kill them both.

If. It was that if that kept his eyes on her. These stolen moments could be all he ever had.

Jolie brother mine

Sounds great, right?  Didn’t read the first book, BROTHER MINE?  No worries.  Here’s what it’s all about.

In a future world where aliens are hated, loving one is the most dangerous thing a girl can do. Mal Renata was born with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth, but it never stopped her from becoming the voice of the Braxian people. As an activist fighting off mankind’s inevitable slide into cruelty and prejudice, she wants to stop the Scourge bill from becoming law, but how can she do that, if the bill’s supporters keep dying? Public outcry wants someone to pay, so she intends to give them someone.

Until she tracks down, Adame Sacha, a Braxian freedman and one of the notorious Brother Assassins, she thinks the brotherhood is her problem. Instead, she finds they may be the best allies she could hope for. Together, she and Adame search for those who are eager to profit from the suffering of the Brax, and they track their prey in a world where lives are held cheaply, but death is expensive.

They may be able to elude the dangers of his world for awhile, but they can’t run from the attraction to each other. No matter what their differences.

An alien assassin romance.

SPIN Author Spotlight–M.S. Tarot

Steve the pirate portrait

For today’s SPIN Author Spotlight, meet erotica writer M.S. Tarot.

The good pirate stopped by recently to tell us a bit about himself as a writer.

To bring a tear to the eye, a quickening to the heart and a smile to the face of my readers. That is and should be the goal of every writer.

Passion and emotion in balance is what every erotica story both needs and requires to bring the reader into a place where they never want to leave. I will do my best to bring that about.

He’s a pirate, a poet, a gentleman, and a fellow ginger.  Get to know M.S. Tarot.

1. Describe your books and your writing style.

I enjoy writing about relationships that society often classify as forbidden. Be it for reasons or race, gender, or social stigma. To me nothing is truly off bounds.

2. Talk about your process. Where do you write? When do you write? Are you linear or do you write scenes and put them together later? Who are your muses and where do you get your best ideas?

My “for pay” job is a bit boring so, in times when my hands are busy, I play the “What if?” game in my head. What if this happened, or what if that happened instead. It is such a powerful plot generator. There have been times when I have had to rush to my car and get out a notebook to get the story ideas I have written down and out my head simply so i can work without feeling frantic. I’m completely linear. My first step is thinking up a title. Once that is done I honestly feel like I’m recording a story that is already completed. As if I’m a merely getting it down. I have at times been required to skip a scene and come back to fill it out later,( mostly when I need more research I can’t instantly find to make part of the scene work) but that is rare. In general, I’m first word to last as fast as I can type.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

My latest release was a April Fools Contest story on Literotica. It’s called “Life on Short Notice and it placed 3rd out of 56 entries. https://www.literotica.com/s/life-on-short-notice For a few years I’ve wanted to set a story from the point of a person with dwarfism. What the normal dealings of life and, more important, what relationships are like for a person born with that challenge. I’ve also wanted to turn the gender on the rape culture idiom of a guy with a good promising college and career having just made a “mistake’ and that they should get off with a slap on the wrist. What if the “mistake” or in this case April Fools Prank, was done by a girl? That it was a guy who’s life was shattered by a moment of stupidity. It seemed like an interesting story idea to try and tackle. Something edgy that might be right on the boundary of acceptable. And a challenge to me.

4. What is your current project?

It’s titled “MaryDee Night” and should be released by Deep Desires Press in October. It’s an exploration of Drag, Transgender, and LGBT. Originally meant as a short story for a threesome anthology I added to it and brought the characters to greater life. This story is raw and steamy, pushing even my own limits. (Yeah, like I have those silly things.) Oliver West was a man trying to follow in his dad’s footsteps, but found he couldn’t fill those big shoes. An accident during Airborne training nearly kills him and allows him to finally see this fact. But it also showed his father, Benson West, the same thing. Disowned by his father, unsure of what to do, Oliver descends into a spiral of depression that leads to an attempt at suicide. Leaving his old life behind to simply live for pleasure, Oliver becomes the club hound known as “O” to his friends. But even this is not enough. He’s still lost and remains that way till he finds the lovely Paige Turner. With her help he will finally find out who he was always meant to be and that the shoes he needed to fill where high heels. MaryDee Night.

5. Now about you… Very generally speaking, where do you call home?

Middle Alabama. A redhead southern.

6. As a reader… What genre do you most often read? What is your all-time favorite book, and why?

Paranormal romance, Fantasy, and Sci-fi are my normal go to books, but I’ll read anything. At times I read between one to three books a week. Currently reading the Honor Harrington series by David Weber.

7. What do you like to do when you’re not writing or reading?

Medieval reenactment in the SCA, shooting pool with friends, D&D and other role playing games. Mostly I live in my owe head … it’s only scary to others, to me I know what doors not to open. What curtains not to look behind and what not to feed raw meat to.

8. We all have guilty pleasures. I enjoy boy bands. There, I said it. What is your guilty pleasure?

I’m a sensualist. Warm wind, snow, rain.

9. What superpower would you choose, and why?

 Mind reader. Secrets are fun.

10. If you could live anywhere, you’d choose…

 Ireland.

11. I wish _________________ would read my book.
